# Put an xAI Grok Voice Agent on an Indian Phone Number

> How to connect an xAI Grok Voice Agent to an Indian phone number over SIP: register the number with xAI, save the Grok SIP URI on Edesy, route the number, and test without dialling.

**To put a Grok Voice Agent on an Indian number, buy the number on Edesy, register it with xAI in
IP-allowlist mode using the Edesy egress IP, save `sip:<number>@sip.voice.x.ai` as an inbound SIP
destination with Transport on Auto, and route the number to that destination. Use the destination's Test call to check
before going live.**

## How it works

xAI's Grok Voice Agent is a hosted agent that answers calls on its own SIP endpoint. It needs a telephony
provider to route phone calls to it. For Indian numbers, Edesy is that provider:

1. A caller dials your Edesy number.
2. Edesy sends the call over SIP to `sip:<number>@sip.voice.x.ai`.
3. Grok answers and runs the conversation on xAI's side.

No media streaming setup is needed on your side, and there's no server for you to run.

## What xAI expects

At the time of writing, xAI's documentation describes the Grok SIP endpoint like this. Check xAI's current
docs before you go live.

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| SIP URI | `sip:{number}@sip.voice.x.ai` |
| Auth | IP allowlist (`allowed_addresses`) or SIP digest |
| Codecs | G.711 u-law, G.711 A-law, G.722 |

Edesy carries G.711 by default, so no transcoding setup is needed. Use **IP-allowlist** mode: Edesy dials
Grok without digest credentials.

## Step-by-step setup

### Step 1: Get an Indian number

Complete KYC on Edesy (PAN and Aadhaar; review takes about 24 hours) and buy a mobile, landline, toll-free or
92-series number.

### Step 2: Register the number with xAI

In your xAI account, register the number for your Grok Voice Agent in IP-allowlist mode. Add the **Edesy SBC
egress IP** to `allowed_addresses`; the Grok card on the Edesy SIP page shows it. Keep the webhook signing
secret xAI returns.

### Step 3: Add Grok as an inbound SIP destination

In the Edesy portal, open **SIP** and add an inbound destination:

- **Name:** `My Grok agent`
- **SIP URI:** `sip:+91XXXXXXXXXX@sip.voice.x.ai`
- **Transport:** Auto (leave the default)

Don't add a `;transport=` parameter to the URI. With Transport on Auto, Edesy uses the transport that works with the xAI endpoint (currently TCP).

### Step 4: Test without dialling

Each saved destination has a **Test call** button. It places a real call from one of your numbers to the
Grok URI, so you can confirm connectivity, the xAI allowlist and agent pickup without calling over the phone network.
Test calls are rate-limited and charged like normal calls.

### Step 5: Route the number

Open the number, set **When a call comes in** to **SIP**, and pick `My Grok agent`. Call the number from a
mobile; Grok should answer.

## Checklist and common failures

| Check | Symptom if wrong | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Number registered with xAI in E.164 | Call rejected by xAI | Register `+91XXXXXXXXXX` exactly |
| Edesy egress IP in `allowed_addresses` | 403 from xAI | Copy the IP from the Grok card on the SIP page |
| Transport on Auto | Call never connects | Set Transport back to Auto and remove any `;transport=` from the URI |
| Number routed to the destination | Caller hears your old routing | Set inbound routing to SIP, pick the Grok destination |
| Wallet balance | Calls fail before ringing | Top up the INR wallet |

## Grok vs Groq: don't mix them up

The names look alike but are different companies:

- **Grok (xAI)**: a hosted Voice Agent with its own SIP endpoint. This guide.
- **Groq**: an inference API for running models fast. It has no phone or SIP endpoint. To use Groq models on
a phone call, build an agent with LiveKit or Pipecat and connect it to Edesy. See
[connect a LiveKit agent to an Indian number](https://edesy.in/blog/connect-livekit-agent-to-indian-number-sip-2026).

## Grok compared with other ways to connect an AI agent

| Approach | What you run | Edesy routing target |
|---|---|---|
| xAI Grok Voice Agent | Nothing; xAI hosts the agent | SIP destination |
| LiveKit Cloud agent | Your LiveKit agent | SIP destination |
| Vapi, Retell, Bolna, Dograh | Agent on that platform | SIP destination |
| Your own bot (Pipecat or custom) | A WebSocket server | Media stream (raw audio) or Conversation Relay (text) |
| Edesy AI voice agent | Nothing | Edesy AI voice agent |

All of these use the same Indian numbers, the same INR wallet and the same call logs, so you can switch the
routing target on a number without changing the number. The
[SIP trunk for AI voice agents](https://edesy.in/sip-trunk-for-ai-voice-agents) page goes deeper on each option.

## Things to plan for

- **Transfers to a human:** xAI's docs describe transferring calls with SIP REFER. Test transfers to your
  team's numbers before launch.
- **Recording:** turn on per-number recording on Edesy if you need copies; recordings are stored in
encrypted cloud storage with signed links.
- **Encryption:** SIP TLS and SRTP are available on request for Edesy SIP paths; ask support whether they
  apply to your Grok setup.
- **Capacity:** if you expect many simultaneous calls, see
[how many SIP channels do I need](https://edesy.in/blog/how-many-sip-channels-do-i-need-2026).

More detail is in the [xAI Grok guide in the SIP docs](https://edesy.in/docs/sip-trunking/guides/xai-grok-voice-agent) and on the [SIP trunking page](https://edesy.in/sip-trunking).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can an xAI Grok Voice Agent answer calls on an Indian number?

Yes. Grok Voice Agents receive calls over SIP. Buy an Indian number on Edesy, register it with xAI in IP-allowlist mode, save the Grok SIP URI as an inbound SIP destination on Edesy with Transport left on Auto, and point the number at it.

### Is Grok the same as Groq?

No. Grok is xAI's model family, and the Grok Voice Agent is a hosted agent with its own SIP endpoint. Groq is a separate company offering an inference API with no telephony; to use Groq models on a phone line you build an agent in a framework such as LiveKit or Pipecat and connect that instead.

### Which IP address do I allowlist in xAI?

The Edesy SBC egress IP. The xAI Grok card on the SIP page of the Edesy portal shows the exact IP to add to allowed_addresses.

### Which SIP transport should I choose for Grok?

Leave Transport on Auto when you save the Grok destination. Edesy picks the transport that works with the xAI endpoint (currently TCP), so you don't need to add a transport parameter to the URI. If you need SIP TLS and SRTP on other Edesy SIP paths, they are available on request.

### Can the Grok agent make outbound calls through Edesy?

This guide covers inbound calls. An Edesy termination trunk accepts outbound calls from any SIP platform that can dial out through a trunk, so check whether xAI currently supports trunk-based outbound calling before relying on it.

### What does it cost on the Edesy side?

Rs 0.50/min with a 60-second pulse, unanswered calls free, plus number rental (mobile or 92-series Rs 499/mo, landline Rs 449/mo, toll-free Rs 999/mo). Prices exclude 18% GST. xAI bills its agent usage separately.
