# Quick Start

> Forward an Indian virtual number to your team in a few minutes, from the forwarding.edesy.in portal or with one API request.

Source: https://edesy.in/docs/call-forwarding/getting-started/quick-start

You can forward a number in three steps: pick an Indian virtual number, add the phones that should ring, and call it from another phone to test. Forwarding switches on as soon as you save the rule. The same setup is one `POST /v1/forwarding/rules` request if you prefer the API.

## In the portal

1. Sign in at [forwarding.edesy.in](https://forwarding.edesy.in) and make sure the wallet has at least Rs 1.00.
2. Open **Forwarding Numbers** and choose **Create forwarding number**.
3. **Virtual number:** pick a number you own from the list, or choose **Buy a number** (KYC required). The number can't be changed after the rule is created.
4. **Label** (optional), for example "Sales line".
5. **Forward to:** add up to 5 phone numbers, each with an optional label.
6. **Ring behaviour:** keep the defaults (ring all at once, 25 seconds, your virtual number as caller ID, "press a key to accept" on, connect only when the destination picks up) or change them. See [Forwarding Rules](https://edesy.in/docs/call-forwarding/rules).
7. Save. Calls to the number now ring your team.

## With the API

Create an API key in the portal, then:

```bash
curl -X POST https://voice-api.edesy.in/v1/forwarding/rules \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer sk_your_api_key" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "did_number": "+918071387146",
    "name": "Main line",
    "targets": [
      { "number": "9876543210", "label": "Sales" }
    ]
  }'
```

You get `201` and the rule. Keep its `id` to change or turn off forwarding later. Sending the same request again for the same number is safe: you get the same rule back. See [Rules API](https://edesy.in/docs/call-forwarding/api/rules).

## Test it

1. From a different phone, call your virtual number.
2. The forward-to phone rings. When it is picked up, the person hears "You have a forwarded call. Press any key to accept."
3. They press a key and the call is connected.
4. Open **Call Logs** in the portal (or `GET /v1/forwarding/call-logs`). The call shows who answered, duration, status and cost.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Callers hear "This number is not in service" | The rule is paused, or every forward-to number is disabled | Turn forwarding on again and check the numbers on the rule |
| Callers hear "Service temporarily unavailable" | The wallet balance is below Rs 1.00 | Top up. Calls work again straight away |
| Your team answers but the caller is never connected | Screening is on and nobody pressed a key | Press any key at the prompt, or turn screening off |
| Nobody rings | A forward-to number is wrong or switched off | Check the numbers, then the call's status in the call log |

## FAQ

**How long does setup take?**
A few minutes once you have a number. Buying a number needs KYC, which takes about 24 hours to review.

**Do I need to write code?**
No. The portal does everything. The API is optional.

**Can I forward to a landline?**
Yes. Forward-to numbers can be Indian mobile or landline numbers.

**Can I have two rules on one number?**
No. Each number has one rule. Edit the rule to change who rings.

**Does forwarding switch on immediately?**
Yes, within a few seconds of saving. If the API returns `502 inbound_activation_failed`, the rule was saved but not switched on yet; send the same request again.

**Can I test without being charged?**
A test call that is answered is billed like any other call, at Rs 1.00 per minute. A call nobody answers is not charged with the default connect-on-pickup setting.
