Everything you need to know about pricing products for online selling in India
To calculate your selling price: Start with product cost, add GST (5-28% based on category), add platform fees (0-25%), add shipping costs (₹40-150), add COD charges if applicable (2-3%), add your profit margin. This calculator automates all these calculations for you.
Platform fees vary: Shopify charges 0% (only payment gateway fees of 2%), Amazon India charges 5-25% referral fee + closing fee, Flipkart charges 5-20% commission + fixed fee, Meesho charges 0% commission (margin-based model). Our calculator compares all platforms.
GST rates depend on product category: 0% for essentials, 5% for basic items, 12% for processed goods, 18% for most products and services, 28% for luxury items. If your annual turnover exceeds ₹40L (₹20L for services), GST registration is mandatory.
COD (Cash on Delivery) charges are typically 2-3% of order value or ₹30-50 fixed fee per order. Additionally, COD orders have higher RTO (Return to Origin) rates of 15-30%, which increases costs. Factor in both COD fee and RTO risk when pricing.
Shipping costs depend on: Weight (₹40-60 for <500g), Distance (local ₹40, zonal ₹60, national ₹80-100), Speed (standard vs express), and Carrier (India Post cheapest, private couriers faster). Heavy/bulky items use volumetric weight pricing.
For lowest fees: Shopify (0% platform fee, 2% payment fee) is cheapest but requires marketing. Meesho (0% commission) is good for beginners. Amazon/Flipkart charge 10-25% but provide traffic. Best choice depends on your product and marketing capability.
Shopify charges 0% commission + 2% payment fee. You control pricing, branding, and customer data. Marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart) charge 10-25% commission but provide traffic and trust. For ₹1000 product: Shopify costs ₹20, Amazon costs ₹100-150.
Profit Margin = (Selling Price - Total Costs) / Selling Price × 100. Total costs include: Product cost, GST, Platform fees, Payment gateway fees, Shipping, Packaging, COD charges, Returns/RTO costs. Aim for 20-40% margin after all deductions.
Recommended minimum margins: Fashion/Apparel 40%+ (high returns), Electronics 15-20%, Home goods 25-30%, FMCG 10-15%. Account for 5-15% return rate, marketing costs, and working capital needs. Lower margins work only at high volume.
RTO (Return to Origin) costs include: Forward shipping (wasted), Return shipping, Repackaging costs, Product damage. RTO rates: Prepaid orders 3-5%, COD orders 15-30%. For a ₹500 product with 20% RTO, add ₹40-60 to your pricing to cover RTO losses.
