Understanding Indian Salary Components

Basic Salary

The fixed component of salary, typically 40-50% of CTC. PF and gratuity are calculated on basic salary. Higher basic means higher PF contribution but also higher tax liability.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Tax-exempt allowance for employees paying rent. Exemption is the minimum of: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, or 50%/40% of basic (metro/non-metro).

Provident Fund (PF)

Mandatory contribution of 12% of basic (up to Rs.15,000 basic). Both employee and employer contribute equally. Employee contribution is tax-deductible under 80C.

Professional Tax (PT)

State-level tax on profession/employment. Maximum Rs.2,500 per year. Rates vary by state - Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal have the highest rates.
