If your AI voice agent hangs up halfway through, it is almost always mistaking a polite "thank you", "no thanks" or "okay" for a goodbye. We saw this in a real B2B sales deployment: buyers said "thank you" after a question, or "no" to "do you need it this month or in 90 days?", and the agent ended the call before collecting budget and timeline. The fix was not a better model. It was a five-point closing checklist in the agent's instructions. Here is the problem, the fix and the related rules.

What was happening
The agent's job was B2B qualification: need, quantity, budget, timeline and decision-maker (see BANT qualification with AI voice calls). In recordings, calls ended early in three patterns:
- Mid-call "thank you". The buyer said "thank you" after answering a question. The agent heard a goodbye.
- "No" to a choice question. "Do you need these this month, or within 90 days?" "No, not this month..." The agent heard "no" and closed.
- "No thanks" to one offer. The buyer declined one option but was still interested overall.
Each time, the agent used its end-call tool, sometimes without even saying goodbye.
The fix: a five-point closing checklist
The agent may end the call only when all five are true:
- The call has run at least a minimum time (for this use case, 60 seconds).
- The closing question was asked in exact words, e.g. "Is there anything else I can help you with today?"
- The caller gave an explicit "no" to that closing question.
- The goodbye was spoken as its own turn: "Thank you for your time. Have a good day."
- Only then use the end-call tool.
And an explicit rule: "thank you", "okay", "no" or "no thanks" at any other point are not goodbyes. Acknowledge them and continue with the next question.
"Not sure" is not the end
When the buyer says "not sure" about budget or timeline, the agent now records that field as callback pending and moves on, instead of wrapping up. The account manager sees exactly what to follow up on.
Related rules from the same fix
- Always speak before using a tool. Saving data or ending the call without a spoken line leaves the caller in silence. See how to fix dead air on AI calls.
- Stop talking after the closing line. The opposite failure (an agent that keeps talking after goodbye) is fixed by the same checklist.
- Ignore "this call is being recorded" announcements and business call-screening assistants. They are not the buyer.
- Don't switch languages on one word. Switch to Hindi only after two full Hindi sentences.
How to write it in your prompt
A short block in the agent's instructions works well:
Ending the call. Only end the call when: (1) at least 60 seconds have passed, (2) you have asked "Is there anything else I can help you with today?", (3) the caller clearly said no, and (4) you have said goodbye. "Thank you", "okay" or "no" earlier in the call are not goodbyes. Acknowledge them and continue. Always say something before using any tool.
Adjust the minimum time to your use case: 20-30 seconds for a reminder, 60+ for qualification.
How to check it worked
- Listen to 20 calls after the change.
- Count calls that ended before all questions were asked.
- Check the average call duration went up for connected calls, and "callback pending" appears instead of empty fields.
