SIP Trunking Feature

Routing Applications

An application is the call logic a trunk hands a call to. Keeping applications as separate, reusable objects means the behaviour of a call is not welded to the trunk that carried it: you can change what a number does without touching the connection, and reuse the same behaviour across several numbers.

What Applications gives you

Define what happens to a call once it arrives, and point different trunks or numbers at different behaviours.

Behaviour separate from connection

Change what a call does without reconfiguring the trunk carrying it.

Reuse across numbers

One application can serve several numbers rather than being duplicated per line.

Managed as objects

Create, inspect, update and delete applications as your call handling evolves.

Swap behaviour quickly

Point a number at a different application when requirements change.

How Applications works

End to end, in the order it actually happens.

  1. 1

Create an application describing how calls should be handled.

  2. 2

Attach it to a trunk or a specific number.

  3. 3

Inbound calls are handed to that application.

  4. 4

Update or swap the application as needed.

What Applications does not do

Worth knowing before you build a process around it.

  • An application defines handling. It does not create the people or systems that ultimately answer.
  • Confirm the specific capabilities available to an application against the API documentation rather than assuming a particular feature set.

Common uses

  • Inbound call handling

  • Routing by number

  • Out-of-hours behaviour

  • Connecting trunks to voice applications

What is SIP trunking?

SIP trunking is a method of delivering voice calls over the internet using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). It replaces traditional PRI/ISDN lines, connecting your PBX or contact center to the public telephone network (PSTN) via an internet connection.

How is SIP trunking different from PRI?

SIP trunking uses internet connectivity instead of physical copper lines. It offers elastic capacity (add or remove channels instantly), lower cost per minute, geographic flexibility, and no need for on-premise telco equipment. PRI lines are fixed at 30 channels and require hardware installation.
