An auto attendant is an automated receptionist: it greets callers and routes them by keypress to the right person. An IVR does that and more: it can speak data, collect keypad or spoken answers, call your API during the call, take voicemail, and place outbound calls. Every auto attendant is a simple IVR.

The short version
| Auto attendant | IVR (interactive voice response) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Route the call to a person | Route, inform, collect, act |
| Caller input | Keypress | Keypress, and on some systems spoken answers |
| Typical flow | Greeting, menu, transfer | Greeting, menu, lookups, questions, transfer or self-service |
| Talks to your systems | No | Yes, through HTTP/API calls |
| Outbound calls | No | Yes (reminders, confirmations, surveys) |
| Data captured | Which option was chosen | Choices, digits, spoken answers, outcomes |
| Who builds it | Office admin | Admin for menus; a developer for API steps |
| Best for | Offices, shops, clinics, small teams | Order status, bookings, confirmations, surveys, collections |
What an auto attendant does
An auto attendant replaces "Good morning, how may I direct your call?" with:
"Thanks for calling Sharma Associates. For accounts, press 1. For audit, press 2. For anything else, press 0."
Each option transfers the call. That is the whole job. It works well when the caller already knows what they want and someone is available to take it. Modern auto attendants usually also include:
- a holiday or after-hours message,
- forwarding to mobiles, not just desk phones,
- voicemail when nobody picks up,
- a "press 0 for a person" option.
What an IVR adds
An IVR keeps the call in the system for longer and does useful work:
- Speaks data: "Your order 4417 for Rs 1,299 is out for delivery."
- Collects input: a 1 to 5 rating, an order number, a yes/no, a spoken city name.
- Acts during the call: sends the choice to your API, which confirms a booking or cancels an order.
- Runs outbound: your system triggers a call that runs the flow, such as a payment reminder or COD confirmation.
- Hands off to a bot: streams the call to an AI agent you run.
Which one you need
Choose an auto attendant if:
- callers mostly want to speak to someone,
- you have two to four teams or people to route to,
- nothing in the call needs to look anything up.
Choose a fuller IVR if:
- many calls ask the same question your system already knows the answer to (order status, balance, slot),
- you need to confirm, cancel or record something without a person,
- you want to call customers automatically and collect a response.
Many businesses start with an auto attendant and add IVR steps to one branch later, for example "press 3 for order status" calling your API. If you're still deciding whether you need a phone system at all, see virtual number vs cloud PBX vs IVR.
How each looks in Edesy IVR Studio
Edesy IVR Studio is a drag-and-drop call-flow builder, so the same tool does both.
Auto attendant (template: Department menu):
- Start
- Say: "Thanks for calling {Business}."
- Menu: 1 sales, 2 support, 3 billing (timeout and max digits are settings).
- Transfer or Dial on each branch: a phone number, a SIP address, or a registered browser or app softphone, with caller ID and an announcement.
- Voicemail if you want callers to leave a message.
IVR (template: Order confirmation, API + HTTP):
- Your app calls
POST /v1/ivr/callswith the published flow and variables (name, order ID). - Say speaks the variables.
- Menu: 1 to confirm, 2 to cancel.
- HTTP Request sends the choice to your API, signed with HMAC.
- Say confirms, then Hangup.
Other nodes available: Play audio, Ask (spoken answers), Email notification, Pause, Reject (a blocklist), Stream (hand the call to your bot) and Order Action for connected stores. See the IVR node reference for the full list.
Business hours: what to know
There is no built-in time-of-day switch in IVR Studio today. Two honest ways to handle after hours:
- Two flows: publish a daytime flow and an after-hours flow, and connect the number to the one you need.
- Ask your own system: put a sync HTTP Request node first, pointing at an endpoint you host that returns 200 when you're open and an error when you're closed. The flow branches on Success or Failure. See the HTTP Request node guide.
For what to play when closed, see voicemail for after-hours calls.
Design tips for either
- Keep the greeting to one sentence; see IVR greeting examples.
- No more than four options per menu.
- Always offer a way to reach a person.
- Test on a real call before publishing.
