Bring your own AI voice bot

Hand IVR Calls to Your AI Voice Agent

The AI Voice Agent step in Edesy IVR streams the live call audio to your own bot over a WebSocket and plays the bot's audio back to the caller. The bot takes over the call from that point. Use it as the first step, or behind a keypad menu that offers press 0 for a person.

How the handoff works

The IVR answers the number; your bot does the talking

  1. Step 1 of 4: Run your bot

Host a voice bot that accepts a WebSocket, for example one built with Pipecat and your choice of speech and language models.

  2. Step 2 of 4: Add the AI Voice Agent step

Paste the bot's wss:// URL and choose 16 kHz (recommended) or 8 kHz audio.

  3. Step 3 of 4: Decide what comes first

Put a greeting or a keypad menu in front, such as "press 1 for our assistant, press 0 for a person".

  4. Step 4 of 4: Test call and publish

Call the flow from your own phone, check the bot hears and answers, then connect your number.

AI Voice Agent step settings

Setting Options Notes
Bot WebSocket URL Required, wss://... Your bot's endpoint
Sample rate 16 kHz (recommended) or 8 kHz Audio flows both ways at this rate

The step is the end of the flow: once the call is streaming, your bot is in charge of the conversation, including when to end it. Steps you place before it, such as a Config step that records the whole call, a greeting or a menu, still run first.

Example flow: AI assistant with a human option

This is the AI assistant, with a human option template:

  1. Start, then Menu: "For our virtual assistant, press 1. To speak with a person, press 0."
  2. Key 1: AI Voice Agent with your bot URL.
  3. Key 0: Transfer with the announcement "Connecting you to an agent."

The simpler AI voice assistant template greets the caller ("Hi! You're through to our virtual assistant. How can I help?") and streams straight to the bot.
