An AI outbound calling bot dials a contact list for you, holds a real two-way conversation with each person in their own language, records the outcome, and automatically retries the people it could not reach, running many calls in parallel. In India it is used mostly for short, structured calls: EMI and payment reminders, COD and order confirmations, appointment reminders, surveys, and lead callbacks. Because most of these calls last under a minute, the number to budget is cost per connected call, not cost per minute.
This guide explains how outbound AI campaigns work, which calls suit them, what they really cost, the Indian rules you must follow, and how to pick a platform.
What is an AI outbound calling bot?
It is easiest to understand by comparing it with the tools it replaces:
| Tool | What the customer hears | Can it understand replies? | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice broadcast / IVR blast | A recorded message, maybe "press 1" | Keypresses only | One-way announcements |
| Auto-dialer + human telecaller | A person, after a pause | Yes | Sales, complex conversations |
| AI outbound calling bot | A natural voice that responds to what they say | Yes, in their language | Reminders, confirmations, surveys, qualification |
The bot sits between the two. It sounds like a conversation, not a recording, and it can handle the replies people actually give ("I already paid", "call me tomorrow", "wrong number"). It costs a fraction of a telecaller team for high-volume, repetitive calls, and it can scale to thousands of calls in an afternoon.
Which outbound calls work best with AI?
AI performs best on calls with a clear goal and a small set of likely answers:
| Call type | Typical length | What the bot captures |
|---|---|---|
| EMI and payment reminders | 30-60 seconds | Promise-to-pay date, already paid, dispute, callback |
| COD and order confirmation | 20-45 seconds | Confirmed, cancel, address change |
| Appointment reminders | 20-45 seconds | Confirmed, reschedule, cancel |
| Surveys and feedback calls | 1-3 minutes | Ratings, free-text answers, reasons |
| Lead callbacks and qualification | 1-3 minutes | Interest, budget, timeline, book a meeting |
| Cold calling | 1-2 minutes | Interest, objection, follow-up slot |
For deep dives, see EMI reminder voicebots, calling new leads within a minute and renewal reminder calls.
Calls that need negotiation, empathy for a distressed customer, or judgement calls on exceptions are better handed to a human. A good bot recognises those moments and transfers or books a callback instead of pushing on.

How does an AI outbound campaign work, step by step?
Here is the full flow as it works on Edesy's outbound calling feature. Most serious platforms follow a similar shape, so use it as a checklist when you compare vendors.
- Upload a contact list. Phone numbers plus any custom fields you want the agent to use, such as name, due amount, due date, order ID or appointment time.
- Pick the agent and script. The agent reads the custom fields as variables, so every call is personalised: "Namaste Ravi ji, your EMI of Rs 4,250 is due on the 15th."
- Choose the calling numbers. You can run a campaign on Twilio, Exotel, Plivo, Vobiz or your own SIP trunk, and spread calls across several numbers (round-robin, least-used or weighted) so no single number carries the whole load.
- Set the schedule and calling window. Start now or at a set time, and restrict calls to a daily window in your timezone. Calls that fall outside the window stay queued and resume automatically when it reopens.
- Set concurrency and pace. Each campaign can run up to 100 calls in parallel and dispatch up to 100 new calls per minute. Start lower for a new script and raise it once outcomes look right.
- Configure retries by outcome. Retry only the outcomes you choose, for example no-answer and busy but never completed or wrong-number, on a schedule of up to 10 steps: say 30 minutes later, then the next day at 11:00.
- Handle voicemail and machines. Voicemail detection is a per-agent setting, so the bot does not waste time or money talking to a recording. See voicemail detection for AI calling.
- Collect results. Every call ends with an outcome and the data the agent extracted. Export the campaign as a CSV or push results into your own systems through the API and webhooks.

What does AI outbound calling cost in India?
Per-minute prices look small, but outbound calls are short, answered rates are below 100 percent, and billing rules vary. Work it out per connected call. Here is an illustrative example; every number in it is an assumption you should replace with your own:
| Assumption | Value |
|---|---|
| Contacts in the list | 10,000 |
| Reached within 3 attempts | 60% (6,000 connected calls) |
| Average connected call length | 40 seconds |
| All-in rate (AI + telephony) | Rs 5 per minute |
6,000 calls x 40 seconds = 4,000 minutes. 4,000 x Rs 5 = Rs 20,000, or about Rs 3.33 per connected call. At Rs 4 per minute it falls to about Rs 2.67; at Rs 6 per minute it rises to Rs 4.
Three things change the real figure:
- Pulse billing. Some telephony plans bill in 60-second pulses rather than per second. A 40-second call then costs a full minute of telephony. Check your plan.
- Per-attempt fees. Some platforms charge for every dial attempt, answered or not. With retries, that adds up fast.
- Your AI setup. On Edesy you can use the bundled speech and language models on a plan, or bring your own keys and pay only a Rs 1.5 per minute platform fee. The BYOK cost guide shows when that is cheaper.
For comparison, the same 6,000 calls by a telecaller team means salaries, seats, supervision and attrition, and it takes days instead of hours. Our AI vs human call center cost comparison runs those numbers.
What are the rules for outbound AI calls in India?
The rules depend on what kind of call you are making. This is a practical summary, not legal advice:
| Call type | Number series | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Promotional (offers, sales) | 140 series, via a registered telemarketer | Blocked for people who opted out of that category on the DND registry |
| Service / transactional by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA regulated entities to existing customers | 1600 series | Cannot be tagged, filtered or blocked |
TRAI reaffirmed this split in a clarification on 10 July 2026: the 140 series is "designated exclusively for promotional calls", the 1600 series is reserved for service and transactional calls from financial regulators' entities and government-to-citizen calls, and apps may not tag or filter these calls except where customers have blocked promotional calls through DND (Storyboard18 report).
On top of TRAI:
- Calling hours. Stay within reasonable hours for your sector; some regulators set stricter windows, for example for loan recovery calls. Use the campaign's daily calling window to enforce it.
- Consent and data. Keep records of consent and opt-outs, and handle personal data in line with the DPDP Act. See our DPDP compliance guide for voice AI.
- Honour opt-outs on the call. If someone asks not to be called again, record it and exclude them.
For the details, read TRAI regulations for AI calling and the DND registry compliance guide.
Which language should the bot call in?
In India, language decides whether people stay on the line. Hindi and Hinglish cover a large share of lists, but a Telugu, Tamil or Bengali customer is far more likely to engage when the call is in their language. The simplest approach is to split your list by language or region and run one campaign per language, each with an agent written and voiced for that audience. Edesy agents handle Hindi, English, Hinglish code-switching and 20+ Indian languages.
How do you choose an AI outbound calling platform?
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Indian telephony and +91 numbers | Works with Exotel, Plivo, Vobiz or your SIP trunk, not only US carriers |
| Daily calling window with timezone | Keeps campaigns inside compliant hours automatically |
| Retries by outcome with a schedule | Reaches more people without re-calling those already done |
| Parallel calls and pacing | Finishes a big list in hours, without flooding one number |
| Voicemail and machine handling | Stops you paying for conversations with recordings |
| Indian languages and Hinglish | Keeps people on the line |
| INR pricing and clear per-call economics | Makes budgeting predictable |
| Export and API access | Gets outcomes into your CRM or collections system |

FAQ
Is AI outbound calling legal in India?
Yes, if you follow TRAI's commercial communication rules. Promotional calls must come from 140-series numbers through a registered telemarketer and cannot reach people who blocked that category on the DND registry. Service and transactional calls by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA regulated entities to existing customers use the 1600 series. Sector rules, consent and data protection law apply on top.
How many calls can an AI outbound bot make at once?
It depends on the platform and your telephony capacity. On Edesy, each campaign can run up to 100 calls in parallel and dispatch up to 100 new calls per minute, and you can spread calls across several phone numbers so no single number is overloaded.
How much does AI outbound calling cost per call in India?
Budget per connected call, not per minute. A 40-second reminder at an assumed all-in rate of Rs 5 per minute costs roughly Rs 3.30 per connected call. Check whether your telephony bills per second or in 60-second pulses, and whether your platform charges for unanswered attempts, because both change the real number.
Can the bot retry people who did not answer?
Yes. A good outbound platform lets you choose which outcomes to retry, such as no-answer or busy, and when. On Edesy you set a retry schedule of up to 10 steps, for example 30 minutes later and then the next day at a set time, and only the outcomes you select are retried.
Can an AI outbound bot call in Hindi and regional languages?
Yes. Edesy agents handle Hindi, English, Hinglish code-switching and 20+ Indian languages. For mixed lists, split contacts by language or region and run a campaign per language so every customer hears a voice and script that fit them.
