Edit PDF Text: Change the Words Already in Your PDF

Fix a typo, a name, a date or an amount in a PDF without the original Word file. Click the line on the page, type the new words, and save. The old words are taken out of the file and the new ones are drawn in the same place, in the PDF's own font when it has the letters you typed. Everything runs in your browser.

Can I edit the text in my PDF?

A PDF made on a computer (for example a LibreOffice export or a browser's Save as PDF)

Its text can be found and replaced in place. Lines that cannot be edited are shown on the preview.

New text with ₹, Hindi or other Indian scripts

Only English letters, numbers and common Latin characters can be typed for now. Write "Rs" instead of ₹.

A scanned document or phone photo

There is no text in it, only a picture. Make it searchable first, or type over it.

OCR the PDF

Rewriting whole paragraphs

Text does not reflow, so long rewrites will not fit. Convert to Word, edit there, and save as PDF again.

PDF to Word

A password-protected PDF

Remove the password first, then edit.

Features

  • Click any line on the page preview to edit it

  • The old text is removed from the page, not hidden under a white box

  • Uses the PDF's own font when it contains every character you type

  • Otherwise uses the closest of Helvetica, Times or Courier (bold and italic kept) and tells you

  • Everything else on the page stays exactly where it was, still as sharp text

  • Undo, review every change in a list, and a check of the saved file

When people use it

Typos and wrong names

Correct a misspelt name or word in a letter, certificate or report that only exists as a PDF.

Dates and numbers

Change a date, invoice number or amount in a PDF you made yourself, without rebuilding it.

Small wording changes

Swap a word or two in a heading or a line of a document before sending it again.

How editing PDF text works

Your words are replaced, not covered

A PDF stores text as instructions that draw each letter at an exact spot. The tool finds the instructions that draw the words you changed, takes those words out, and draws the new words at the same starting point and baseline, in the same colour. Words before and after them on the line keep their exact positions.

Many "PDF editors" only paint a white box over the old text and type on top, so the old words can still be copied out of the file. Here the old words are gone from the page, and after saving the tool re-reads the file to confirm the old text is gone and the new text is there.

Fonts

PDFs usually carry only the letters a document actually used. If every character you type is in the PDF's font, the new words use that font and match the rest of the line. If not, the tool uses the closest standard font: Helvetica for sans-serif text, Times for serif and Courier for fixed-width, keeping bold and italic. The list of changes tells you whenever that happens.

For now new text can use English letters, numbers and common Latin characters (such as é or ü). The rupee sign ₹ and Hindi or other Indian scripts cannot be typed yet; write "Rs" instead of ₹.

Limits worth knowing

  • Text does not reflow. New words must fit roughly where the old words were; slightly longer text is narrowed to fit, much longer text is refused.
  • Scanned pages and photos have no text to edit. Make them searchable with OCR PDF first, or type over them with Add Text to PDF.
  • Some text cannot be edited here, such as text drawn inside a reusable page element or vertical text. The page preview shows which lines can be edited.
  • Need text gone for privacy, not replaced? Use Redact PDF, which blacks it out and removes it.
  • Password-protected PDF? Unlock it first. Big rewrites are easier in Word: convert the PDF to Word.
