Why do upload portals ask for a flattened PDF?

Fillable fields can display differently, or not at all, in the software a portal uses to read your file. Flattening makes the answers part of the page, so they are always visible.

Will my filled-in answers be kept?

Yes. Every field is redrawn from its value before it is flattened, including forms saved without appearances, which other tools often turn blank.

Does flattening break a digital signature?

Yes. Any change to a signed PDF invalidates the signature. The tool warns you when it finds a signed field. Flatten before signing if you can.

Is flattening the same as password protection?

No. Flattening removes the fillable fields; it does not stop anyone opening, printing or copying the file. Use Protect PDF for that.

Form fields, scripts and metadata are processed in your browser. Only if you tick "Flatten comments and stamps too" is the file sent to our server for that step, and it is deleted immediately after.

Can I undo flattening?

No. Keep a copy of the original if you might need to edit the answers later.

What flattening changes

A fillable PDF keeps each answer in a separate form field layered on top of the page. Flattening draws every answer onto the page itself and removes the fields, so the document looks identical but can no longer be edited field by field.

Why some flattened PDFs come out blank

Forms filled in a browser often save the answer without redrawing the field (they set a flag called NeedAppearances). Tools that flatten the stored drawing produce empty boxes. This tool redraws every field from its value first, so your answers are kept.

Flattening is not protection

Anyone with a PDF editor can still add new text on top. To stop opening or copying, use Protect PDF.
