Reading a PDF at night with a dark background

Use full invert to keep text selectable, or dark mode to keep colours natural.

A scanned PDF

Every mode works on scanned pages.

Saving ink when printing

A dark page uses far more ink. Convert to black and white instead.

Why invert a PDF

Reading at night

Bright white pages are harsh in a dark room. A dark copy is easier on the eyes.

E-readers and tablets

Readers without a built-in dark mode for PDFs can open the inverted copy.

Light sensitivity

Some readers find light text on a dark background less tiring.

Invert, dark mode or sepia?

Full invert

Every colour flips: white pages turn black, black text turns white, and photos look like negatives. With "Keep text selectable" on, the tool adds an inverting layer on top of each page instead of redrawing it, so text still selects and searches and the file stays almost the same size.

Dark mode

Dark mode flips only the lightness of each colour. Backgrounds go dark and text goes light, but a blue link stays blue and a red heading stays red. Pages are redrawn as images to do this, so text is no longer selectable.
