Is the redacted text really removed?

Yes. Every page with a redaction is rebuilt as an image with the details blacked out, so the text cannot be copied, searched or extracted. The tool re-reads the finished file to confirm it.

How do I make a masked Aadhaar PDF?

Turn on "Mask Aadhaar (keep last 4 digits)". Only the first 8 digits are blacked out, the way a masked Aadhaar shows XXXX XXXX 1234.

Why was my scanned PDF not redacted automatically?

A scan is a picture of text, with no text the tool can read. The tool tells you which pages are scans. Use Redact PDF to draw boxes over them by hand.

Can I keep some of the matches?

How automatic redaction works

Real removal, not a black box on top

Many free tools draw a black rectangle over the text. The text is still in the file, and anyone can copy it out. Here, each page with a redaction is rebuilt as an image with the details blacked out, so the hidden text no longer exists in the file. Pages without redactions are left exactly as they were.

After redacting, the tool reads the new file and confirms none of the redacted text can be found.

How numbers are recognised

Aadhaar numbers are only matched when their check digit is valid, and card numbers must pass the Luhn check, so invoice numbers and other long numbers are not flagged by mistake. Bank account numbers, VIDs and dates of birth are only matched next to words like "A/c", "VID" or "DOB".

What it cannot see

Scanned pages and photos have no readable text, so nothing is found there. Draw boxes by hand with Redact PDF.
Signatures, photos and handwriting are not detected. Use Redact PDF for those too.
