Which images can be extracted?

Photos and pictures placed in the PDF

Saved at original quality, JPEGs untouched.

A scanned PDF

Each page scan is saved as an image, except fax/JBIG2-compressed scans.

Charts, logos or text drawn as vector graphics

These are not stored as images. Save the whole page as a picture instead.

How image extraction works

Why the quality is the original

Most photos inside a PDF are stored as JPEG files. This tool copies those bytes out unchanged, so you get exactly the image that was put into the PDF, at its full resolution. Screenshots of a page can never do that.

Why some pictures are missing

Charts, logos and diagrams are often drawn as vector graphics rather than stored as images, so there is no image file to extract. To save those as pictures, export the whole page with PDF to JPG.
