Taking the photos

• Lay the page flat on a dark, plain surface so its edges stand out.
• Use daylight or a bright room. The filter evens out a soft shadow, but a hard shadow across the writing can still hide strokes.
• Keep all four corners in the frame and fill most of the photo with the page.

What the Handwriting filter does

It estimates how bright the paper is in each part of the photo and divides that out, so a page lit from one side becomes evenly white. Then it keeps the darker pen strokes and fades lighter marks such as ruled lines. Blue ink stays blue.

Very light pencil can fade along with the lines. If that happens, lower the brightness or raise the contrast slider, or switch to the Document filter, which keeps more of the original.

Meeting an upload limit

Pick "Under 1 MB" (or your portal's limit) before creating the PDF. The size is shared across pages, so more pages means less detail per page. Already have a PDF that is too big? Compress it to an exact size.

Searchable text from handwriting

The result is an image PDF: you can read and print it, but not search or copy the words. OCR PDF can add a text layer, but it is built for printed text. On handwriting its accuracy is low, so do not rely on it for anything you need word for word.
