QR Code Generator FAQ

Everything you need to know about creating QR codes

What is a QR code and how does it work?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a pattern of black and white squares. When scanned with a smartphone camera or QR reader app, the encoded information (URL, text, contact, etc.) is decoded and displayed. QR codes use error correction to remain readable even if partially damaged.

Is this QR code generator completely free?

Yes, our QR code generator is 100% free with no hidden charges. You can create unlimited QR codes without signup, watermarks, or limitations. All processing happens in your browser - we don't store your data.

What types of QR codes can I create?

You can create QR codes for: URLs/websites, plain text, email addresses (mailto:), phone numbers (tel:), SMS messages, WiFi credentials, vCards (contact info), WhatsApp messages, Google Maps locations, and UPI payment links.

What is QR code error correction?

Error correction allows QR codes to remain scannable even if part of the code is damaged or obscured. Level L recovers ~7% damage, M ~15%, Q ~25%, and H ~30%. Higher levels create denser codes but are more resilient. Use H level for printed materials that may get worn.

What size QR code should I create?

Size depends on scanning distance: 2cm QR scans from ~20cm (business cards), 10cm from ~1m (flyers), 30cm from ~3m (posters), 1m from ~10m (banners). For print, always use high resolution (512px+). Our generator supports 128px to 1024px.

PNG vs SVG - which format should I download?

Use PNG for digital use (websites, social media, emails) - it's widely compatible. Use SVG for print materials (business cards, posters, packaging) - it scales to any size without losing quality. SVG is also smaller in file size.

How do I create a WiFi QR code?

To create a WiFi QR code, enter your network credentials in this format: WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourNetworkName;P:YourPassword;; Replace WPA with WEP or nopass for other security types. When scanned, users can join your WiFi without typing the password.

Can I create a QR code for WhatsApp?

Yes! Enter a WhatsApp link like: https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hello or wa.me/CountryCodePhoneNumber. The QR code will open WhatsApp with a pre-filled message when scanned.

How do I create a UPI payment QR code?

Enter your UPI link: upi://pay?pa=yourname@upi&pn=YourName&am=100&cu=INR where pa is your UPI ID, pn is display name, am is amount (optional), and cu is currency. Works with Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and all UPI apps.

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes (like those created here) never expire. The QR code itself is just encoded data. However, if the URL it points to becomes invalid or the website goes offline, scanning will fail. For dynamic QR codes with tracking, you'd need a paid service.

Can I customize QR code colors?

Yes, you can set custom foreground (dark squares) and background colors. Ensure high contrast for reliable scanning - black on white works best. Avoid light foreground colors or low-contrast combinations. Some scanners struggle with inverted (white on black) codes.

Is there a character limit for QR codes?

Yes, QR codes have capacity limits: ~7,089 numeric characters, ~4,296 alphanumeric characters, or ~2,953 bytes of binary data. For URLs, keep them under 2,000 characters. Longer content creates denser, harder-to-scan codes.

How do I create a vCard QR code for my business card?

Create a vCard in this format: BEGIN:VCARD\nVERSION:3.0\nN:LastName;FirstName\nTEL:+919876543210\nEMAIL:[email protected]\nEND:VCARD. When scanned, it adds your contact details directly to the phone's contacts.

Can I add a logo to my QR code?

This basic generator creates standard QR codes. For QR codes with embedded logos, you need error correction level H (30%) which leaves room for a small center logo. Professional tools offer this feature, but it can reduce scan reliability.

QR Codes for Indian Businesses

QR codes have become essential for Indian businesses, especially for UPI payments. Create payment QR codes for Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and all UPI apps. Restaurant owners can generate digital menu QR codes to replace printed menus. Retailers can add product QR codes linking to reviews, tutorials, or warranty registration.

Tips for Better QR Codes

  • Always test your QR code before printing
  • Maintain high contrast between foreground and background
  • Use higher error correction (Q or H) for printed materials
  • Download SVG for print to maintain quality at any size
  • Keep URLs short - use URL shorteners for long links
  • Leave quiet zone (white space) around the QR code
