M4A to MP3 Converter

Turn M4A files into MP3s that play everywhere: in car stereos, old media players, editing apps and upload forms that reject M4A. Add one file or a whole batch, convert, and download. The conversion runs in your browser, so your recordings are never uploaded.

When people use it

iPhone voice memos

Voice Memos saves M4A. Convert a lecture, interview or meeting recording to MP3 to share or edit it anywhere.

Upload forms that only take MP3

Portals, podcast hosts and some editing apps list MP3 but not M4A. Convert first, then upload.

Older players and car stereos

Many USB car stereos and basic MP3 players can't read M4A. MP3 plays on all of them.

About M4A and MP3

What is an M4A file?

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio file, usually holding AAC audio. Apple uses it for Voice Memos, iTunes purchases and GarageBand exports, and many Android recorders and messaging apps use it too. It sounds good at small sizes, but not every device or app opens it.

MP3 is older and plays almost everywhere. Converting is the simplest way to make a recording work on whatever device or site you need.

Will the MP3 sound worse?

Both formats are compressed, so converting re-encodes the audio. For speech (memos, calls, lectures) you won't hear a difference. For music, keep the original M4A as your master copy and use the MP3 for compatibility.

Tips

  • The first time, click Load Audio Engine: the converter downloads once and takes a few seconds. After that, files convert quickly.
  • Very long files (several hours) need a lot of memory. If a browser tab struggles, cut the file into parts first with the Audio Cutter.
  • Need a different format? The full Audio Converter outputs WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG and more.
