WAV to MP3 Converter

WAV files are large because they aren't compressed: a minute of CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB. Convert them to MP3 and they become roughly 10 times smaller, small enough to email, upload or share on WhatsApp. Add one file or many; the conversion runs in your browser.

When people use it

Sharing recordings

Voice recorders, mixers and DAWs export WAV. Convert to MP3 before emailing or sending it in a chat.

Upload size limits

Forms, LMS portals and podcast hosts often cap uploads. An MP3 of the same recording fits where the WAV doesn't.

Saving storage

Keep MP3 copies of long recordings on your phone and archive the WAV masters elsewhere.

How much smaller will it get?

WAV vs MP3 size

Uncompressed WAV at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo is about 10 MB per minute. A standard MP3 at 128 kbps is about 1 MB per minute. So a 30-minute recording goes from around 300 MB to around 30 MB.

  • 1 minute: about 10 MB as WAV, about 1 MB as MP3
  • 10 minutes: about 100 MB as WAV, about 10 MB as MP3
  • 1 hour: about 600 MB as WAV, about 60 MB as MP3

Will I lose quality?

MP3 is a lossy format, so some detail is removed. For speech, interviews and most listening you won't notice. If you will edit or master the audio later, keep the WAV and send the MP3.

Tips

  • The first time, click Load Audio Engine: the converter downloads once and takes a few seconds. After that, files convert quickly.
  • Very long WAV files use a lot of memory. If the tab struggles, split the file with the Audio Cutter first.
  • Want it smaller still? Run the MP3 through the Audio Compressor.
