When you connect a SIP trunk to an AI voice agent, you authenticate it one of two ways: static IP (ACL) peering, or SIP registration with a username, password, and realm. Both are standard SIP options and both support inbound and outbound. This guide explains how each works and when to choose it.

Both connect a SIP trunk to your AI voice agent
Also called IP-based auth or peering. Your carrier and Edesy trust each other by IP address. You whitelist Edesy's SIP IP on your carrier and allow the trusted IPs on both sides. No SIP registration is used; calls are accepted based on the source IP.
Also called credential-based auth. The trunk authenticates with a username, password, and realm. This works when the endpoint IP is not fixed or when your carrier issues SIP credentials rather than peering by IP.

Pick the mode your carrier and setup call for
Your carrier offers IP peering, your endpoints have fixed IPs, and you can whitelist our SIP IP. This is common for larger peered trunks.
Your carrier issues SIP credentials, your IP is dynamic, or you cannot arrange IP whitelisting. Credentials authenticate the trunk instead.
Both modes support UDP, TCP, or TLS per gateway on the port you choose (default 5060). Auth mode does not limit transport.
Inbound and outbound calling work with either authentication mode. You define inbound and outbound gateways in both cases.
Authentication is chosen per carrier, so you can run one trunk on static IP and another on registration if your setup needs both.
Whichever mode you pick, calls terminate on Edesy's managed SIP infrastructure, accessed through the Edesy Voice API.
