DTMF Tone Generator plays the tones a phone keypad makes and turns a typed digit sequence into a WAV file. Tones and files are generated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to Use#
- Press and hold a key on the on-screen keypad, or use your keyboard (0-9, *, #). The tone plays for as long as you hold it. Each key shows its low and high frequency.
- Optional: turn on Show A-D keys for the extra column used by test equipment.
- Type a Digit sequence, for example
1,,2*45#. A comma adds a pause. - Set Tone length (ms), Gap between tones (ms) and Pause for each comma (ms). The defaults are 100, 100 and 500. The gap is at least 40 ms so repeated digits such as
11stay two separate presses. - Click Play sequence to hear it, or Stop to cut it short.
- Choose a WAV sample rate: 8000 Hz (telephone) (default) or 44100 Hz, then click Download WAV.
Things to know#
- Allowed characters: 0-9, *, #, A-D and commas. Spaces, dashes and brackets are ignored, so you can paste a formatted phone number. Other characters are removed and listed in a warning.
- Length limit: the sequence can be up to 2 minutes long. The tool shows the number of tones and the total length as you type.
- Output: 16-bit mono WAV.
- Privacy: everything is generated in your browser.
Tips#
- To test an IVR menu, use commas to wait for each prompt, for example
1,,3,,2, and raise the comma pause if the menu is slow. - Use 8000 Hz for anything that goes into a phone system or telephony decoder. Use 44100 Hz for video and music editing.
