Our BPM finder uses the Web Audio API to decode your audio file into raw waveform data. A low-pass filter isolates the bass frequencies where kick drums and bass beats reside. The algorithm then calculates energy levels in small time windows, identifies peaks that correspond to beats, and computes the tempo from the intervals between those peaks.
Different music genres tend to cluster around specific BPM ranges. Hip-hop typically sits at 80-115 BPM, pop music at 100-130 BPM, house and techno at 120-135 BPM, drum and bass at 160-180 BPM, and dubstep at 130-150 BPM. Knowing these ranges helps DJs select compatible tracks for mixing and producers target the right feel for their genre.
