Will this change the key of my song?

Move a song up or down a few semitones for singing or playing

Up to 12 semitones either way, with the speed unchanged. Small shifts sound the most natural.

A big shift, like a whole octave

It works, but more than 5 semitones sounds noticeably processed, especially on vocals.

The tool does not detect keys. Pick the key yourself if you know it to see the new key name.

When people use it

Singing in your range

Lower a song a few semitones for a deeper voice, or raise it for a higher one, before karaoke or practice.

Playing along

Move a backing track into a key your instrument or capo position suits, or match a recording that is slightly out of standard tuning.

Practice and covers

Make a practice track in the key you will perform in, then record over it.

How the pitch change works

Semitones and keys

A semitone is one step on a piano, from a white key to the black key next to it. Twelve semitones make an octave. Moving a song in C major up 2 semitones puts it in D major; down 3 puts it in A major.

The tool does not detect the key of your song. If you know it, pick it and the tool shows the key you end up in. Cents are hundredths of a semitone, useful for matching recordings that are not tuned to A = 440 Hz.

What happens to the sound

The audio is resampled to change the pitch, then time-stretched back to its original length, so the tempo does not change. Small shifts of 1 to 3 semitones usually sound natural. Shifts of more than 5 semitones sound noticeably processed, especially on voices, because the voice character moves with the pitch.
