To convert HEIC to JPG on Windows or Android, open a browser-based converter, drop the photos in and download the JPGs. The Edesy HEIC to JPG converter does this without uploading your photos, handles many files at once and saves them as a single ZIP. If you want new iPhone photos to be JPG from the start, switch the camera to Most Compatible (steps below). It is free, needs no signup and adds no watermark.
Why HEIC files won't open
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones use for photos by default. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality, which is why Apple uses it. The catch is support:
- Windows needs an extra image extension from its app store before the built-in viewer shows HEIC.
- Android support depends on the phone and the app. Some gallery apps open HEIC, others do not.
- Upload forms for job portals, exam applications, government services and many websites accept only
JPG or PNG, and reject
.heicoutright.
Converting to JPG fixes all three, because every device and form reads JPG.
Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
- Copy the photos from the iPhone to your PC (cable, cloud folder or chat app, whatever you normally use).
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter in your browser.
- Drag the
.heicor.heiffiles onto the tool, or click to choose them. You can select a whole folder's worth at once. - Leave the output on JPG. The quality slider starts at 90%; move it toward Smaller file or Better quality if you like. You can also pick PNG if you need a lossless file.
- Click Convert to JPG. Each photo shows its own progress and a preview when it is done.
- Click Download under a photo, or Download all (ZIP) to save them together.
The first conversion downloads the converter once (about 2.7 MB). After that it runs from your browser.
Convert HEIC to JPG on Android
The steps are the same in a mobile browser:
- Save the HEIC photos to your phone (for example from a chat or a shared drive).
- Open the converter, tap the drop area and choose the photos from your files.
- Tap Convert to JPG, then download each photo or the ZIP.
On a phone, convert in smaller batches. Every photo is decoded in the browser's memory, and a phone has less of it to spare than a computer.
Stop the iPhone from shooting HEIC
If the photos are yours, the simplest fix is at the source:
- Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG. Photos you have already taken stay HEIC.
- Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Automatic. When you copy photos to a computer over a cable, the iPhone converts them to a compatible format during the transfer.
Keep in mind that Most Compatible photos take more storage on the phone, which is the trade-off HEIC was designed to avoid.
A worked example: fitting photos into an upload limit
Say you are sending 30 iPhone photos to someone who uses Windows, and after converting they average 3.5 MB each as JPG:
30 photos x 3.5 MB = 105 MBThat is too big for an email with a 25 MB attachment limit. Two ways to fit it:
| Approach | Arithmetic | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Split into batches | 105 MB / 25 MB = 4.2 | 5 emails |
| Compress the JPGs to about 0.8 MB each | 30 x 0.8 MB = 24 MB | 1 email |
For the second route, run the converted JPGs through the Image Compressor. For a single upload form with a tight limit (often a few hundred KB for photos and signatures), compress one photo at a time until it fits. If the form wants one document rather than several images, combine them with JPG to PDF; our guide to converting PDF to JPG and JPG to PDF covers that step.
Good to know
- No metadata. The converted JPG does not keep the date taken, camera details or location. That is useful for privacy when sharing, but keep the originals if you need those details.
- Burst or multi-image HEIC. If one HEIC file holds several images, only the first is converted.
- Wrong files are flagged, not converted. The tool accepts
.heicand.heifonly. If a file is already a JPG or PNG, or is damaged, you see a message for that file. - Other formats. Got a
.webpimage from a website or chat instead? Use WebP to JPG, which works the same way.
Quick answers
Is it safe for personal photos? Yes. The conversion happens in your browser, so the photos are not sent anywhere.
Will the JPG be bigger than the HEIC? Usually, yes. That is expected, because HEIC is the more efficient format. Compress afterwards if size matters.
PNG or JPG? JPG for photos you want to share or upload. PNG only if you need lossless output and do not mind much larger files.
Working with customer photos at scale?
If photos arrive from customers as part of a support or order process, the conversion is often one step in a longer workflow. Edesy builds AI voice agents that handle the calls around that workflow, in Indian languages.
