Short answer: the missed call survives because it asks nothing of the person making it. No app, no internet, no typing, no language choice and no cost. It works on a basic keypad phone exactly as it does on a flagship smartphone. For any campaign that needs to reach all of India rather than just its app-using minority, that is still hard to beat.

A Habit Before It Was a Product
The missed call was a social habit long before it was a marketing channel.
When mobile phones spread in India, calls were billed by the minute and many users ran on small prepaid balances. People worked out that a call which rang and was cut before it was answered cost nothing, yet still carried a message. The meaning came from context:
- "I have reached safely."
- "I am waiting outside, come down."
- "Call me back, I do not have balance."
- "Thinking of you."
Families, friends, shopkeepers and their customers all understood the code. Nobody had to be taught it. That shared understanding is why businesses could later print "give a missed call" on a newspaper ad and expect people to know exactly what to do.
Call charges have fallen a lot since then and most people are on bundled plans. The habit, though, outlived the economics that created it, because it was never only about money. It is also the fastest, lowest-commitment way to say "I am interested" without having to talk yet.
The Four Barriers a Missed Call Removes
Most digital lead capture quietly assumes a particular user: a smartphone, mobile data, comfort with typing in English, and patience for a form. In much of India, at least one of those assumptions fails for a large share of people.
| Barrier | Web form | App | WhatsApp message | Missed call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Needs a smartphone | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Needs mobile data | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Needs typing | Yes | Usually | Yes | No |
| Needs a shared language | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Cost to the user | Data | Data + storage | Data | None |
| Time to complete | Minutes | Minutes | Under a minute | Seconds |
No app
Asking someone to install an app to express interest is a big ask. Storage is often full, and an app installed for one campaign is usually deleted soon after.
No internet
Feature phones are still in use, and many smartphone users ration their data or have patchy coverage. A missed call uses the voice network, which reaches places where data is weak.
No typing
Typing a name and address on a phone is slow for anyone and harder for people who are not comfortable with the keyboard script. A missed call needs only the number to be dialled, and the caller's number is captured automatically.
No language barrier
India has many languages and scripts. A form or a chatbot has to pick one or offer a menu. A missed call has no words in it at all. The caller hears a busy tone and nothing else, so it works the same for a Tamil, Bhojpuri or Assamese speaker. Language matters only on the callback, where your team can speak to the person in theirs.
Why It Still Matters to Businesses
These properties are why missed calls remain in use for campaigns that need breadth:
- FMCG and D2C on-pack offers, where a pack reaches households that will never visit a website.
- Political and civic campaigns, where the goal is supporter sign-up across a whole state. A state-level political campaign uses Edesy's missed call service to capture supporters into its own website via webhook.
- Rural banking, insurance and NBFC lead generation, where the customer may not use apps.
- Hoardings, wall paintings and radio, where the viewer cannot click anything.
- Polls and contests on TV and radio, where one number per option counts unique callers.
- Field staff attendance, where workers call from a registered phone to mark presence.
The missed call service page lists the main use cases, and missed call marketing ideas for India has more.
What a Missed Call Does Not Do
Being honest about limits helps you design a better campaign:
- It carries no information except the caller's number and the time. If you need a name, a pincode or a preference, you get it on the callback. Several numbers (one per option or product) are the only way to collect a choice in the call itself.
- It does not reply on its own. The caller hears a busy tone. If you want to send an SMS or WhatsApp message back, that is available on request and we set it up for your account.
- The value is in the follow-up. A list of numbers that nobody calls back is just a list. Plan who will call, in which language, and how fast.
- Consent is your responsibility. If you plan to send ongoing messages, make the terms clear in the ad and keep records of who opted in.
Designing a Campaign for Bharat
A few principles that follow from the above:
| Principle | In practice |
|---|---|
| Lead with the action | "Missed call on 9xxxx xxxxx" in the largest font on the ad |
| Promise a clear outcome | "for a free sample", "to register", "for the price list" |
| Use the audience's language in the ad | The number is universal; the offer text should be local |
| Call back in the caller's language | Route by region or campaign number to the right team |
| One number per region or option | So the dashboard tells you where response came from |
| Plan for bursts | Use several numbers for TV or election-day spikes, since each number has a limit on simultaneous calls |
How It Works With Edesy
Edesy's missed call service gives you Indian virtual numbers that reject calls with a busy tone, so callers are never charged. Each call's number and time is logged instantly, visible in a dashboard with total and unique callers, and downloadable as CSV for free. A signed real-time webhook can push each lead to your CRM, sheet backend or website.
Pricing is ₹499 per month per number, plus ₹0.30 per event only if you use the webhook, or ₹1,498 per month for an unlimited plan (all plus GST). KYC is required. See pricing for prepay discounts.
To send leads straight into a CRM, Edesy CRM has a free plan and accepts missed call leads through its custom webhook lead source.
Missed Call vs Other Low-Friction Options
Other channels also try to lower the barrier. Each has a place, but each asks a little more of the user:
| Option | What the user must do | Where it falls short for mass reach |
|---|---|---|
| QR code | Smartphone, camera, data, then usually a form | Excludes basic phones and low-data users |
| SMS keyword to a short code | Type a keyword correctly and send | Typing and spelling errors; some users pay for SMS |
| WhatsApp "click to chat" | Smartphone, WhatsApp, data, typing | Excludes basic phones; conversation load on your team |
| Toll-free call answered by IVR | Wait, listen, press keys | Long calls cost you per minute; IVR menus lose people |
| Missed call | Dial and hang up | Carries only number and time |
Many campaigns combine them: a QR code for smartphone users and a missed call number for everyone else, on the same poster. The missed call number is the safety net that ensures nobody is excluded.

The missed call is old, unglamorous and still one of the few actions every phone owner in India knows how to take. Get a Missed Call Number and put it on the ad, pack or poster that has to reach everyone.
