SMS reaches every phone and costs little per message, but getting a clear yes or no back is the hard part. A confirmation call asks the question out loud and gets a keypress. Here is how the two compare, and when SMS is enough.
Keypad confirmation call
An automated call reads out the store name, order number and COD amount in Hindi or English. The customer presses 1 to confirm or 2 to cancel, and the result is written back to the store.
Best for: Getting an actual answer, from customers who don't read or reply to texts
SMS confirmation
A text with the order details asking the customer to reply, click a link or give a missed call to confirm or cancel.
Best for: Low-cost notification on every phone, and stores that only need a reminder rather than a definite answer
Generic comparison of the two methods, not of any particular vendor
| What matters | Keypad call | SMS |
|---|---|---|
| Works on feature phones | ||
| Works without internet or WhatsApp | ||
| Customer must read | ||
| How the customer answers | Presses 1 or 2 during the call | Replies, clicks a link or gives a missed call |
| Gets a definite yes or no | During the call, if answered | Only if the customer acts on the text |
| Interrupts the customer | Yes, a ringing phone | No, read at leisure |
| Main cost driver | Call attempts and minutes | Messages sent, plus a reply number or link |
| Setup in India | Calling rules and DND hygiene | DLT sender ID and template registration |
| Write-back to store | Built in (tag, note, cancel) | Depends on how replies are handled |
| Languages | Hindi and English voice | Any language you can write |
Both SMS and a phone call work on every mobile phone, including feature phones, with no app or data connection. That is where SMS is strong and WhatsApp is not.
The difference is what comes back. A text sits alongside bank alerts and promotions, and many customers never reply, never click the link, or don't read English or Hindi script comfortably. A call asks the question out loud, in Hindi or English, and the customer answers with one key while you wait.
SMS has its own advantage: it never interrupts. A customer in a meeting can read it later, and it costs little per message.
We are not going to quote you a percentage. Compare the channels with your own numbers:
Example arithmetic (replace with your own numbers):
cost per answered order = (cost per attempt × attempts per order) ÷ share of orders that answer
value per answered order = share of answers that are cancels × your cost per RTO
A cheap message that rarely gets answered can cost more per answered order than a call. A call that most customers pick up can be worth it even though each attempt costs more. Only your own response rates settle it. The COD confirmation call cost calculator and the COD RTO calculator do this arithmetic with inputs you can change.
With our confirmation calls, the answer is written back to the order as a tag (such as COD-CONFIRMED), a note or a cancellation, depending on your platform. With SMS, check how replies, link clicks or missed calls reach your store: automatically, or as a list someone has to work through before packing.
In India, business SMS needs DLT registration of the sender ID and message templates. Automated calls should go out only in reasonable hours and skip numbers that have opted out. Our calls run only inside the calling window you set in IST, and numbers on your do-not-call list are skipped.
Honest guidance, including where SMS wins
If...
You need a definite yes or no before shipping
Then...
Keypad call
The customer answers during the call with one key. Unanswered calls are retried on your schedule and then flagged.
If...
You only want to remind the customer that a COD parcel is coming
Then...
SMS
If you don't need an answer, a text is the cheapest way to inform every phone.
If...
Many buyers are more comfortable listening than reading
Then...
Keypad call
A Hindi call with the amount spoken in words is easier to act on than a text with a link.
If...
Your COD order value is low and margins are thin
Then...
Run the numbers
Compare cost per answered order for both channels with your real rates. For very low-value orders, SMS or no confirmation may be the sensible choice.
If...
You want both
Then...
SMS first, call the rest
Send the text at order time and send us only the orders still unconfirmed for a call, or call first and text the unreachable ones.
