Video Trimmer - Complete Guide

Cut the start and end off an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video in your browser, without re-encoding or frame-accurate.

Video Trimmer cuts the start and end off a video. The video is processed in your browser, so it is not uploaded, and there is no watermark.

How to Use#

  1. Click Load Video Engine. This loads once per visit.
  2. Drop a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV) onto the tool.
  3. Set where the clip starts and ends. You can drag the Selection slider, type a Start time and End time, or play the video and click Set start at current time and Set end at current time.
  4. Check the Clip length and click Play selection to preview it.
  5. Choose a Trim mode: Fast or Precise.
  6. Click Trim Video, watch the trimmed clip, then click the Download button below it.

Things to know#

  • Fast (default): no re-encode, so it is quick and keeps the original quality and format. It cuts at the nearest keyframe, so the clip can start a little early.
  • Precise: re-encodes to MP4 (H.264 at the standard quality setting) and cuts on the exact frame, but takes longer. Subtitle tracks are not kept, and an odd width or height is rounded down by one pixel. If Fast fails on a file, try Precise.
  • Large files: the whole video is held in your browser's memory. Files over 500 MB show a warning and can fail on phones; a computer with free memory works best. The upload limit is 2 GB.
  • Preview: if your browser can't preview a file, you can still type the start and end times and trim it.
  • Browser support: needs WebAssembly, which current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have.
  • Privacy: the video stays on your device.

Tips#

  • Use Fast for quick shares where a fraction of a second doesn't matter. Use Precise when the clip must start on a specific frame.
  • Click Choose another video to start over with a new file.
