Cut the fumbling at the start and the moment you reach for the stop button at the end of a phone or screen recording.

Pulling a moment from a long recording

Take a single answer, goal or demo out of a meeting, match or webinar recording.

Trimming a video

Fast or Precise?

Fast mode copies the video and audio as they are, so it finishes quickly, keeps the original quality and saves in the same format as your file. The catch is that a copied video can only start on a keyframe, a full picture that most videos store every few seconds. Your clip may therefore begin a little before the start time you chose.

Precise mode re-encodes the clip to MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio), so it starts and ends on the exact frame. It takes longer, especially for long or high-resolution clips, and the quality is close to the original rather than identical. Subtitle tracks are not kept, and a video with an odd width or height loses one pixel row or column, because H.264 in MP4 needs even dimensions.

Choosing the start and end

  • Type a time as seconds (75.5) or minutes:seconds (1:15.5). Longer videos also accept hours (1:02:03).
  • Or pause the preview where you want and click Set start at current time or Set end at current time.
  • Or drag the two handles on the selection slider. The preview jumps to the handle you move.
  • Click Play selection to watch just the part you will keep.

Large files and browser memory

The whole video is loaded into your browser's memory while it is cut, and the trimmed copy sits next to it. Short clips and everyday phone videos work well. Very long or very large files can fail, most often on phones or with many tabs open. If that happens, close other tabs, use a computer, or shrink the file first with the Video Compressor.
