Hindi Typing

Type Hindi the way you chat, in English letters, and it appears in Hindi as you type: "kya aap hindi bolte ho" becomes क्या आप हिंदी बोलते हो. Typing Hindi with English letters

The basics

  • Type words as you would in a chat: "ghar" for घर, "pyaar" for प्यार.
  • Double a vowel for its long form: aa आ/ा, ee ई/ी, oo ऊ/ू. A final a, i or u is read as long (kya क्या, paani पानी).
  • Letters typed together join: "namaste" gives नमस्ते, "dost" gives दोस्त.
  • Capital letters are the hard sounds: T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण, Sh ष, R ड़.
  • M gives the anusvara ं, ~ the chandrabindu ँ, and a full stop after a Hindi word becomes ।.

Why there are suggestions

English letters don't say everything Hindi spelling needs: "bharat" could be भरत or भारत, and "main" is usually मैं, not मैन. The tool follows the usual rules to get most words right straight away, and shows the other likely spellings under the box. Tap the right one and it is used for that word from then on, on this device.
