English Pronunciation Checker: Read Aloud, See What Was Understood

Pick a practice sentence (or type your own), listen to how it sounds, then read it aloud. The tool shows which words a speech recogniser understood, which it heard as something else, and which it missed, with a score you can try to beat.

Will this work for me?

Chrome, Edge or Safari with a microphone

Recording and word-by-word scoring work. In Chrome, audio is processed by Google’s speech service.

Firefox

Firefox has no speech recognition. You can listen to sentences but not record. Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Safari.

A detailed phonetic or accent score

This checks what a recogniser understood, not individual sounds. See how your accent comes across instead.

Accent detector

Scoring fluency, pace or filler words in a longer answer

This tool scores one sentence at a time. Use the spoken English test for longer answers.

Spoken English test

Features

  • Practice sets for v/w, th, z/j, word stress and silent letters

  • Type your own sentence: a presentation line, an interview answer, a name of a product

  • Listen to the sentence first with your browser’s built-in voice

  • Word-by-word result: understood, heard as a different word, or not heard

  • Choose Indian, US or UK English recognition

  • Session history so you can see your score change as you retry

When people use it

Before an interview or call

Practise the sentences you will actually say and check a recogniser can follow every word.

Working on one sound

Drill a single pattern, like "v" and "w" or "th", until the words come out the way you mean them.

Talking to voice assistants and voice bots

If phone menus and assistants often mishear you, see which words trip them up and practise those.

How the score works, and what it does not measure

What the tool measures

Your browser’s speech recogniser writes down what it heard. The tool lines that up against the sentence, word by word, using several of the recogniser’s guesses and keeping the one that fits best. The score is the share of words it wrote down as you intended.

Numbers, capital letters and punctuation are ignored, so "33" counts as "thirty three". Words that sound identical ("for" and "four") and UK/US spellings ("colour" and "color") are not counted against you.

What it does not measure

  • It is not a phonetic or accent assessment. A recogniser can understand a word said with any accent, and it can also guess a word correctly from context even when the sound was off.
  • It does not grade stress, rhythm or intonation directly. Those only show up when they make a word harder to recognise.
  • Scores vary between browsers, microphones and rooms. Compare your attempts on the same device.
  • Curious how your accent comes across instead? Try the Accent Detector, the Indian Accent Test, the American Accent Test or the British Accent Test.

Where your audio goes

Edesy never receives your voice. Recognition is done by your browser: in Chrome, the browser sends the audio to Google’s speech service, and Edge and Safari use their own vendors’ services. Firefox has no speech recognition, so the checker cannot record there.
